The Packaging Shift Redefining Industries
A quiet revolution is happening across the shelves of Europe. From gourmet nut jars in Berlin to spirits in Stockholm and instant coffee in Barcelona, more and more brands are ditching glass and embracing PET. And it is not just a trend – it is a movement with momentum, and it is rewriting the packaging playbook across industries.
At EMBACO, we are right in the middle of this transformation. As one of Europe’s largest suppliers of PET packaging, we have been noticing a strong uptick in companies reaching out to explore PET alternatives to their existing glass solutions. Especially in categories like instant coffee, alcohol and spirits, nuts and spreads, herring, and sauces, the shift is not only visible – it is accelerating.
The Glass Legacy – And its Limits
Let us face it: glass has long been the gold standard for premium packaging. It feels luxurious, has a long history, and is endlessly recyclable. But it also comes with trade-offs that are increasingly hard to ignore in a fast-moving, sustainability-conscious, cost-sensitive world.
Glass is heavy. It breaks. It requires more energy to produce and transport. And as logistics costs rise and sustainability goals tighten, more and more companies are asking the big question: Is glass still worth it?
Why PET is Winning
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is not new, but the technology and design possibilities surrounding it have evolved dramatically in the last decade. What once might have been considered a “cheap” alternative is now a versatile, strong, and visually appealing material that ticks a lot of boxes:
1. Lightweight Efficiency PET can be up to 90% lighter than glass. That translates into massive savings on shipping, reduced carbon footprint, and better ergonomics for consumers.
2. Shatterproof and Durable Unlike glass, PET does not shatter. That is a game-changer for brands concerned with safety in transport and shelf-life performance.
3. Lower Carbon Footprint The carbon footprint of PET production and transport is significantly lower than that of glass. A 2020 study from Plastic Europe found that PET bottles have around 77% lower CO2 emissions across their life cycle compared to glass.
4. Fully Recyclable PET is 100% recyclable and widely collected across Europe. As collection systems improve and rPET (recycled PET) becomes more available, circularity in packaging is increasingly achievable.
5. Design Freedom Modern PET manufacturing allows for high-end finishes, embossing, and even the look and feel of glass – without the drawbacks. It is no longer a compromise on aesthetics.
Sector Spotlight: Who Is Making the Move
Instant Coffee
The convenience factor is king in the instant coffee world. PET containers are lighter, easier to reseal, and travel-friendly. For brands shipping internationally or distributing to supermarkets, the savings in transport costs alone make a compelling case. And from a branding perspective, modern PET jars can offer clarity and shelf appeal that rivals glass.
Alcohol and Spirits
Yes, even in this traditionally glass-dominated space, change is brewing. Travel retail, festivals, and event markets are leaning into PET for safety and convenience. We have worked with several distilleries looking to offer limited edition PET packaging specifically for events and sampling. PET does not have to mean “cheap.” With custom embossing, tinted finishes, and upscale closures, the end result can look just as premium – and often more modern – as glass.
Nuts and Spreads
The snack sector thrives on accessibility and freshness. PET jars offer great oxygen barriers and resealability. Plus, the transparency of PET helps consumers “see what they buy” – a big plus for health-conscious shoppers looking for clean, natural products. PET also plays nice with automated filling lines and e-commerce packaging, making it a hit with newer DTC brands entering the market.
Herring and Sauces
These categories are often packed in glass for perceived freshness and tradition. But as brands target younger demographics and aim for more sustainable credentials, PET offers a smart alternative. Modern PET containers can handle hot-fill processes and offer airtight seals, keeping contents safe without compromising shelf life. We are seeing Scandinavian brands especially lean into this change, balancing tradition with innovation.
The Sustainability Equation
There is a common myth that glass is the more sustainable choice because it is endlessly recyclable. But that overlooks the energy-intensive nature of glass production and transport. A full life cycle analysis paints a clearer picture: when PET is properly collected and recycled, it outperforms glass in multiple environmental metrics.
In fact, when switching from glass to PET, many of our customers report up to 60% reductions in packaging-related emissions.
And that is before factoring in recycled PET. At EMBACO, we are increasingly offering rPET solutions that meet both performance and sustainability demands. rPET not only reduces virgin material use but also closes the loop in a way that is tangible for eco-minded consumers.
Logistics, Cost and Scalability
Glass is expensive to ship. It is fragile. It requires more protective packaging. PET, on the other hand, is a logistics dream. Lower weight means lower shipping costs and fewer emissions. Shatterproof properties reduce spoilage and returns. And with current supply chains under pressure, the scalability of PET gives it another leg up.
A Cultural Shift
What we are witnessing is not just a material change. It is a mindset shift. Brands today want flexibility. They want packaging that performs, protects, promotes, and aligns with their values.
And let us be real: modern consumers are not falling in love with heavy, breakable glass jars. They want smart, sustainable, and stylish solutions that reflect the fast-paced, conscious world they live in.
As one of Europe’s most forward-thinking PET packaging suppliers, EMBACO is proud to partner with brands that are not afraid to challenge the status quo.
Could PET Work For Your Product?
